The decision to move into an independent senior living community is colored by many different factors. From the financial components to the emotional and physical ones, we know this is not a decision to be taken lightly.
We understand the inherent fear of the unknown associated with change. Our goal is to provide as much information as possible about what the process of moving into Grand Lodge at the Preserve looks like and what you can expect once you decide you’re ready.
Whether you’re still exploring your long-term care options or have decided Grand Lodge is the place you want to be and are curious what the next steps look like, we’re here to help.
1. Choosing an independent living community
First thing’s first, choose the retirement community that best meets your needs and desires. If you are still on the fence about senior living, we encourage you to at least explore your options, and create a plan for how you want to live the next chapter. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Many residents say they wish they’d made the choice to move sooner.
Our sales advisors recommend doing thorough research of at least three different senior living communities to be sure you find the right fit for you. Schedule a visit, whether in-person or virtual, to get a better idea of community life and whether you can picture yourself living there.
When you tour Grand Lodge, you’ll discover our residents are active and engaged. They enjoy sharing their talents with others by volunteering in the community, attending stimulating lectures and taking long walks with pets, friends and family members.
We are a close-knit independent living community and pride ourselves on our shared sense of neighborliness. Our residents and team members alike say the family atmosphere is one of their favorite parts of living at Grand Lodge.
2. Signing a contract & the assessment process
If you’ve explored your options, consulted with your family and financial advisor and have decided Grand Lodge is where you want to be — congratulations! Next, we’ll provide you with the necessary medical and financial assessment documents to complete. These documents ensure that we will be able to meet your needs as long as you are on our campus. Finally, we’ll ask you to put down a deposit on your new home and sign the reservation agreement. As a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), we offer a modified Type A contract. That means that additional health services and support are available at Grand Lodge and paid for in your monthly fee. Should you require that additional care or support, it’s readily available on our campus at no extra cost.
3. Setting a move-in date
With the contract signed, it’s time to look towards the closing date. Our team at Grand Lodge will begin to prepare your apartment to your specifications. We’ll connect you with our resident move-in coordinator who will take note of your accommodation preferences and keep you updated throughout the process until the day of closing. The primary objective of our move-in coordinator — and all of us here at Grand Lodge — is to ensure your move is as seamless as possible, so if any questions come up — about pets, parking or general community life — we are here to help.
The closing process at Grand Lodge is typically 90 days, but can vary depending on the level of desired customizations to your apartment.
4. Selling your home, packing & right-sizing
With a move-in date in mind, it’s time to schedule the moving company. You are welcome to use the movers of your choice or ask our team for a list of companies we recommend. Then it’s time to turn your attention to selling your home and assessing your belongings.
One of the most common concerns we hear from our soon-to-be-residents is they don’t know what to do with all of their stuff. We get it! Downsizing from your previous home to your new home at Grand Lodge can feel like an overwhelming process. There are likely many years of memories that you will be sorting through, so we encourage you to take it slow and be easy on yourself. Maybe even invite friends or family members over to assist in the process. They can help you decide what to keep, purge or donate, and you’ll likely have some fun along the way.
As you sort through furniture and other items, keep your new floor plan handy to help evaluate what will fit and should be kept. We have a number of different floor plan options that are all quite spacious. Our move-in coordinator is also familiar with our floor plans and can help assess which pieces will work in your new home and even help reimagine a new purpose for an item you can’t bear to part with.
5. Moving in
We welcome new residents all year round, although spring and fall in Lincoln, Nebraska, tend to be more popular times for moving thanks to the mild temperatures. Whatever time of year your moving day falls, know that our team will be ready and willing to assist however we can.
In the excitement of a move, it can be easy to overlook some smaller, but very important tasks, like clearly marking what items are in which boxes and packing a small bag of essentials to have on hand immediately. Remember to set aside a few basics you’ll want for your first few days, like snacks, pen and paper, chargers, toilet paper and towels. Of course, if your pets are making the move with you, the same goes for their essentials. Have their bedding, food and bowls readily accessible so they can make themselves right at home.
6. Making a home at Grand Lodge
It’s a fact — moving is exhausting! Take your time unpacking and getting settled in. Take a walk along the property and enjoy a meal in our dining room.
You’ll likely want to hang treasured artwork and photographs on the walls to really make your new space feel more like home. Once you decide where you’d like those items to go, our maintenance team will be happy to get them hung for you.
Over your first few weeks at Grand Lodge, our team members will stop by to welcome you, learn more about your interests and answer any additional questions you might have. And don’t be surprised if your new neighbors stop by to chat and welcome you to our community. We’re all so glad you’re here!
